William Ward Obituary

On February 26, 2022, William V. "Bill" Ward passed away peacefully while surrounded by his beloved family in his Swissvale home.  He was 90 years old.  Born in 1931 in Braddock, PA. he was the devoted husband of 66 years to Gertrude (Pollack), loving father of William and Patricia (Dr. John Fazio), and beloved Pop Pop of John and Grace Fazio.  He was preceded in death by his late parents William S. and Ann, and his sisters Elizabeth, Patricia, and Mary Lou.  He graduated from St. Fidelis seminary in 1949 and then became employed at National Biscuit Co. in East Liberty, where he met his future wife.  He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1952 for service during the Korean War, spending two years at Ft. Belvoir, VA.  He returned home in 1954, and in 1955 he and Gertrude were married.  He then began work at US Steel's Edgar Thomson Works, serving for 43 years at the Braddock mill.  In 1962, he also became involved in the bowling business, and eventually owned and operated the Swissvale Arcade Lanes from 1981 to 1995 as a family venture.  He retired in 1995, spending his retirement as an immensely proud, loving, fun, and devoted grandfather.  Bill loved to golf, and bowl, Pittsburgh sports, his hunting camp in Clearfield, trips to Geneva on-the-Lake, a clever joke, a good song, and a cold beer.  Above all, he loved and cherished his family, and his gentle spirit, sense of humor, and unfailing kindness will be missed beyond words.  Family and friends will be received from 10 am until noon on Tuesday March 1, 2022, at the Robert P. Karish Funeral Home, Brinton Rd and Fourth Street. Braddock Hills, PA (412) 271-3430.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday at 1 pm in Good Shepherd Church, 1025 Braddock Avenue, Braddock of St. Joseph the Worker Parish.  Bill will be laid to rest with Military Honors in All Saints Braddock Cemetery.
